I have the same exact problem and its extremely frustrating. According to the sims 3 forums, the latest versions of the macbook air are not compatible with the sims 3.

(Or you can copy them from the links page) I think you can install it on flash drive but expect it to work smoothly and your save files will be in your PC so even if you take the flash drive everywhere you will have start from scratch.
After installing all of my expansion packs, I tried to get back onto the game and I got the “Uknown error occurred” popup message from the Island Paradise Launcher and I googled everything and tried uninstalling Origin and Uninstalling all my expansion packs and much more and nothing worked and I’m still getting the same error message from the Island Paradise expansion pack which doesn’t make any sense because I thought I installed it and it’s really irritating because it worked earlier today but now it isn’t. I saw that Sims 3 really doesn’t work on post 2013 Macs but mine was working until it wasn’t.

I’ve been facing some snags with my Mac Mini [the late 2012 model] — a computer used mostly for playing Sims™ 3 and to navigate these turbulent Internet waters. Even though the Mac video card model is included and described in both GraphicCards.sgr and GraphicRules.sgr [as “IvyBridge”], i often get the “exception raised” crash when starting the game. It’s a peculiar situation since, • i repeatedly delete the cache documents from the./Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/ folder before i start playing; • even though the Mac Mini has a large amount of memory, i also purge it with “Memory Clean” — a free application i downloaded from the App Store — before i begin playing (and, at times, when playing the game). Yep, it sounds like your Intel HD 4000 is to blame. It doesn’t matter that you have 16Gb RAM, the game can only access up to 2Gb. This is thanks to Cider, the ‘wrapper’ applied to the Windows version of the game to make it Mac ‘compatible’. Upgrading your OS to Yosemite may help as I think it should up the VRAM for the graphics to 1.5Gb.
