While reading various several blogs / posts etc I did realise that this was possibly due to a check in the 'prevent app nap' and 'hopefully' that has stopped now. I had recently updgraded to Mavericks, incidentally. 'Hopefully' because I do not know as yet, due to the new problem I have had since this morning.
